Goal:Virtual Mock-Ups

Status of Use Document: Early Draft

Phase(s):Construction

Objective:

[ _ ] Reduce the cost of onsite construction mock-ups
[ _ ] Reduce the time required to construct actual mock-ups
[ _ ] Better convey the design to the contractors.

Description:

Virtual mock-ups are defined as a digitally rendered three dimensional model that can be used to review design aspects of a physical space (Maldovan, Messner, & Faddoul, August 3-4, 2006). Within the construction phase, virtual mock-ups are utilized to easily communicate the design to all parties, particularly contractors, and how that design can be constructed. It is particularly beneficial when it comes to a complex design that contractors may struggle with or have never seen before.

Potential Benefits:

[ _ ] Significantly reduce the cost and time required to create the mock-up (potentially cut costs by one-fifth).
[ _ ] Ability for contractors to gain a better understanding of how the design can be constructed.
